Midsummer BBQ

Dear members,
building on the success of the Opening Day Lunch, where we welcomed 80 to the clubhouse, Sunday 12th June @2pm is the Midsummer BBQ. Let’s use this opportunity to meet up again, discuss the season so far, and upcoming events. Yes Chef Catering will be providing their signature BBQ package and the bar will also be open. Unfortunately, we need a minimum number of 30 for this event to run, so tickets must be booked in Eventbrite (link below) by Sunday 5th June at 2pm. Please book early, and we look forward to welcoming you on the day.

Blessing of the Boats

Portsalon Bells-Sat 21st May

All,

We are going to run the Portsalon Bells race on Saturday as a pursuit race.

If you are going to participate please email Fergal at fearghalc@outlook.com no later than 6pm Friday.

We need to schedule the starts depending on who is sailing.

The scheduled first start is 9am. We need, Your name, Boat name, Sail number.
The course will be Fahan, Swillymore to Port and finish at the end of the pier at Portsalon in a straight line looking back up the north side of the pier wall and no more than 50 metres from the end of the pier.

Change of time for White Harte Regatta – Sat 7th May

All,

Please note the change of start time for White Harte Regatta for Saturday 7th May 2022. Start time has been changed to 12:30pm with the start moved to a Spit start.

The OD on the day will provide details for the courses.
There will be 2 races on the day, weather permitting.

We will proceed to the White Harte following racing for the presentations.
NOTE: Boats will need to leave the marina approximately 20 minutes BEFORE the scheduled start.

Local Recognition..

NEW SAILABILITY CO-ORDINATOR APPOINTED FOR NORTHERN IRELAND

Ken Curry, Secretary of Foyle Sailability, has been appointed as RYANI Sailability Co-Ordinator for Northern Ireland.14 Apr 22 Ken took up the post in April and is looking forward to helping people with disabilities to get out on the water and take part in sailing and water-based activities.

He started sailing in his 30s and is a member of Lough Swilly Yacht club in Donegal. A keen cruiser, Ken circumnavigated Ireland on “Kind of Blue”, Garry Crothers’ Ovni, as part of an effort to raise awareness of Sailability throughout Ireland.

Ken has taken part in many challenges over the years, some of which he says have been “life changing”. He was asked to help out when Bob Harper (former Sailability Co-Ordinator) brought a group of volunteers from Belfast Lough Sailability to Derry-Londonderry for the first ever Sailability event on the River Foyle. Many of the volunteers stayed with Foyle Sailability and Ken eventually became secretary and the club went from strength to strength.

Commenting on his new post, Ken said: “As someone who has been involved with Sailability for quite a few years now, I enjoy helping when I can and I’m a firm believer in giving those with disabilities the opportunity to get on the water.

“I understand that for a lot of our sailors, just being on the water is stimulation enough, but there are also others who have the skills, drive and abilities to become very competent and competitive sailors too. I am delighted to have been appointed Sailability Co-Ordinator and I’m proud to continue my support of RYA Northern Ireland as I believe it to be one of the most respected organisations locally and throughout the world.

“I am looking forward to helping to give more disabled people – both young and old – the opportunity to enjoy our great sport.”

Congratulating Ken on his new role, RYA Northern Ireland’s Chief Operating Officer Richard Honeyford said: “Ken has been an excellent advocate and ambassador for Sailability in Northern Ireland for many years. His enthusiasm for our sport is infectious and I am looking forward to seeing him continue on his journey to making our sport even more accessible to people of all abilities right across Northern Ireland.”
