HMS Racoon – Centenary Anniversary

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

Rathmullan History Society are planning a small event to commemorate the sinking of HMS Racoon off Malin Head on 9th January 1918 and to remember the 17 of her crew who are buried at St Columb’s Church of Ireland graveyard in Rathmullan.

The commemoration will take place at St. Columb’s on Tues next, 9th January at 1.00pm. Rev Harry Gilmore will lead a prayer and the children from St. Joseph’s National School will lay a flower for each individual seaman on the grave.

We welcome everybody who would like to pay tribute to these unfortunate seamen who lost their lives so tragically, far from home on a freezing January morning one hundred years ago.

Arthur’s Dead!

If you are looking for a present for the seafarer in your life, I have it on good authority that there are copies of Tom Jobling’s new book, Arthur’s Dead, a tale of ne’er-do-well on the high seas off our Northern Irish coast, available in Foyle Books beside the Craft Village in Derry. A good fire-side read from a great local storyteller. Bob Fisher has given it a great review. There are 5 copies left …..
